Artwork is being sought for a garden art competition that offers multiple opportunities for artists including publication in a book, feature on a garden walk poster, and an exhibition.

The “Beauty in Our Backyard: 2018 Gardening Art Competition,” produced by the University Heights Arts Association (UHAA), will offer three cash prizes plus an exhibition of the top 25 finalists’ work.

The first-place winner’s art will be used to create the official poster for the Samuel P. Capen Garden Walk. The cash prizes are, first place, $100; second place, $50, and third place, $25.

Participants will be eligible to include their work in the “Soil, Seeds & Secrets” book as well as other garden art publications produced by the UHAA.

The exhibition, held at local venues as part of the UHAA Art Partnering Program, will host the top 25 selected works plus additional work as space allows. Work for the exhibition must be framed at a minimum size of 20 united inches (10 x 10 or 8 x 12 inches, etc.) and a maximum size of 60 united inches, and ready to hang according to the committee’s instructions.

The deadline for submissions is Feb. 28.

Artwork, which must be original, may take the form of a painting, photograph, drawing, illustration, digital art or mixed media art. Artists should keep their artwork clean, simple and easy to reproduce. Clip art, pictures copied from magazines or other copyrighted images will not be accepted. If working digitally, the final (print quality) art/photo must be 300 dpi at 20 united inches (10 x 10 or 8 x 12 inches, etc.) or larger. The design should be able to accommodate text but should not include any text on the artwork. Winners must make their art available for the exhibition.

For each submission, please email up to five high-quality (large) jpg images of the artwork to information@uhartsgroup.com. Do not email more than 15 mb of images at a time. Submissions must also include the information below in the body of the email. Place “Garden Art Submission” in the subject line of your email.

The 2018 Samuel P. Capen Garden Walk will be held on Saturday, July 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the daytime walk as well as 8 to 10 p.m. for the Capen at Night evening walk. An artists’ reception will be held at the UHAA-St. Andrew Sculpture Garden at 5 p.m., following the daytime garden walk.
