Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara: Public Relations

Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara, Niagara County’s largest nonprofit human services agency serving people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (it has a  greenhouse program as well as other services), is offering an opportunity for an intern to develop practical public relations and communication skills. The internship is available for the spring, summer and fall semesters. The intern will assist with public relations/marketing tasks such as writing, event planning, photography and research. Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens: Wedding and Special Events Intern

Fall 2015 – Working under the direct supervision of the Director of Weddings and Special Events, the individual will work with the events staff in the orchestration and execution of private events and weddings held at the Botanical Gardens. The position includes, but is not limited to, attending/organizing events and clients on event dates. This person must be able to work independently to complete event needs. A high level of written & verbal skills are required. The individual is expected to work on weekdays, weekends, nights and holidays. The intern must be able to work through Dec. 20.  Applicants should possess exceptional customer service and communication skills, be organized, self-reliant, multi-task oriented, and a team player with good attention to detail.  The ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for distances of up to 100 feet is also required. Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens: Education Intern

Working under the direct supervision of the Director of Education, the individual will work with the education team and volunteer docents in the development and execution of programs including Hands-On School and Scout Programs, Guided Tours, Wegmans Family Day Programming, Kids Birthday Parties and special events. The position includes, but is not limited to editing and coordinate materials for the monthly Gardens scavenger hunt and the Docent Training program. The intern will work closely with the Education Team to assist with daily operations. This person must be able to pass a background check. A high level of written & verbal skills are required. The individual is expected to work on select weekdays, Saturdays and occasional evenings. Candidates should have strong organizational skills, be a team player, possess attention to detail and be comfortable working with the public in both organized and informal situations. Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens: Horticulture Intern

Working with the Horticulture staff, the individual will assist with the implementation of daily needs and upkeep for the entire plant collection both indoors and outdoors. Jobs tasks and duties will include watering, weeding, fertilization, propagation and pruning, planting and caring for the health of our unique and interesting collection of plants. Interns will also be involved with the set up and displays of exhibits, events and features related to the Botanical Gardens’ ever changing and exciting programming. Interns can also choose to create their own focus of their internship and can specialize on a specific topic with the approval of the staff. The individual is expected to work on select weekdays, weekends, and occasional evenings. Candidates should have strong willingness to work with staff, volunteers, plants and soil, be able to lift 40 pounds and perform a wide variety of physical tasks. Some familiarity with botany and natural science is a plus but not necessary. Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens: Horticulturist (full-time)

The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is seeking a creative, highly motivated and experienced individual for the full-time position of Horticulturist. Working under the direct supervision of the Director of Horticulture, the Horticulturist will be expected to maintain specialized planting areas and/or the collection in the indoor and outdoor gardens and preform general maintenance when necessary. Experience working with tropical plants in a greenhouse, designing creative displays for flower shows and events and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite is preferred. This position requires a degree in horticulture from an accredited college or university with at least three years of horticulture related experience. The candidate should possess a NYS Pesticide Applicators License and a valid NYS driver’s license.  This position requires a flexible work schedule including some evenings and weekends. Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens: Guest Services & Gift Shop Associate (part-time)

The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is seeking qualified applicants for a part-time position of Guest Services & Gift Shop Associate. The individual will work with the Guest Services & Gift Shop staff to welcome guests and assist in their needs, take admissions, memberships, sell event tickets, answer phones and answer customer questions. Applicant will help to ensure exceptional customer service standards are maintained at all times and help to create a positive and friendly atmosphere at the Botanical Gardens. The individual will assist in the gift shop and at the admissions counters and work closely with volunteers. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of experience in retail and/or customer service. Applicants should possess exceptional customer service and communication skills and be organized, self-reliant and multi-task oriented, a team player with good attention to detail. The individual is expected to work part-time on weekends, holidays and some weekdays.
