Applications are available for Marvin Lunenfeld Beautification Grants, named for Garden Walk Buffalo’s founder.
Completed applications are due Feb. 17, 2017, with anticipated funding awards announced in early spring of 2017.
You can find applications and eligibility requirements here or call (716) 247-5004 and they will mail you an application. The organizers say the application process is easy and they will offer help if you have any questions.
The grants have helped fund dozens of garden beautification projects across the West Side of Buffalo for a total of more than $100,000 since 2005. Projects include community gardens, hanging flower baskets, street corner planter projects and garden restoration. See a list of past projects here.
Award amounts are based on the overall project cost and the eligible projects are required to include matching funds from government, private contributions or volunteer sweat equity. These award projects will be highlighted during the coming year’s Garden Walk.
Garden Walk Buffalo, the largest garden tour in the U.S., is held the last weekend of July each year. In 2017, the free event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 29 and 30.
In 2016, more than 400 residences and businesses throughout the West Side of Buffalo opened their creative urban gardens for tens of thousands of visitors from around the U.S., Canada, and abroad.
Garden Walk Buffalo has become a major event for the city of Buffalo and showcases its friendly people, inspiring architecture, magnificent waterfront and especially its record number of spectacular gardens.
One objective is to give back to the community by supplying funds to blocks clubs and neighborhood groups that want to improve their streets and become part of this wonderful weekend event.
