New Horticulture IV & V classes set at Botanical Gardens; art classes to begin

Two new series of classes, Horticulture V and VI, are being added to the existing series of horticulture classes at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, 2655 South Park Ave., Buffalo.

Art classes are scheduled, too.

Horticulture classes

You don’t have to take the classes in order, so you can take these new classes even if you haven’t completed Horticulture I-IV. You can sign up for just a single class, too.

The classes are all taught by David Clark, nationally known garden educator. He’s not only knowledgeable, he’s very entertaining.

The classes will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays in the Administration Building at the Botanical Gardens.

The classes that will be offered this fall through spring are Horticulture I, II, V and VI. (Horticulture III and IV will be offered in the spring of 2018. They will alternate each year with the new V and VI series.)

Horticulture I

  • Botany 101 on Sept. 10
  • Plant Propagation on Sept. 17
  • Pest Management and Disease on Sept. 24
  • Shrubs and Trees on Oct. 8
  • Annuals and Perennials on Oct. 15
  • Garden Design on Oct. 22

Horticulture II

  • Soil Science for Gardeners on Oct. 29
  • Advanced Plant Propagation on Nov. 5
  • Hydroponics on Nov. 12
  • Water Gardening on Nov. 19
  • Practical Principles of Pruning on Jan. 7
  • Intro to Landscape Design on Jan. 14

For Horticulture I or II, the cost for Botanical Gardens members is $105 for a series of six classes or $22 for an individual class. For non-members, the cost is $130 for a series or $27 for an individual class.

Horticulture V  

  • Houseplant Care and Cultivation on Jan. 21
  • Rain Gardens on Jan. 28
  • All About Roses on Feb. 4
  • Hostas and Hydrangeas on Feb. 25
  • Vegetable and Organic Gardening on March 4

Horticulture VI

For Horticulture V or VI, the cost for Botanical Gardens members for a full series of five classes is $100 and the cost for individual classes is $22. For non-members, the cost for the series is $120 and the cost for individual classes is $27.

Adult art classes

Watercolor and drawing classes for both beginner and intermediate students will be offered at the Botanical Gardens.

Adult art classes are taught by professional artist Joan Saba. Her hands-on teaching style caters to all skill levels.

Beginner Watercolor classes

Beginner Watercolor classes include basic techniques and concepts. They will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. Tuesdays.

The cost for Botanical Gardens Members is $65 per series or $18 per class, and for non-members, $70 per series or $20 per class.

Sessions are:

BW2: Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25

BW3: Nov. 1, 15 and 29 and Dec. 6 

BW4: December 13, 20, January 3, 10

Intermediate Watercolor classes

Intermediate Watercolor classes are for those with previous experience. They will be held from 8:45-10:45 a.m. Mondays.

The cost for Botanical Gardens members is $60 per series or $17 per class, and for non-members, $66 per series or $18 per class.

Sessions are:

IW1 – Sept. 12, 19 and 26 and Oct. 3

IW2 – Oct. 17, 24 and 31 and Nov. 7

IW3 – Nov. 14 and 28 and Dec. 5 and 12

Drawing classes

Drawing classes are for all skill levels. They will take place from 8:45-10:45 a.m. Wednesdays.

The cost for Botanical Gardens members is $60 per series or $17 per class, and for non-members, $66 per series or $18 per class.

DC1 – Sept. 14, 21 and 28 and Oct. 5

DC2 – Oct. 12, 19 and 26 and Nov. 2
