While it’s still too early for you to plant seeds inside, the professionals at Mischler’s Florist and Greenhouses have already started many of the 200,000 plants they will sell at their yearly 49-cent Perennial Sale. The sale will begin Friday, April 24 at Mischler’s, 118 South Forest Rd., Williamsville.
They can start seeds now because they have equipment you probably don’t have, such as a thermostat-controlled germination chamber, heated misting benches and, of course, a greenhouse. There’s also a fascinating little machine that neatly drops each seed into a precise spot on a 288-cell tray.
The whole growing process takes weeks and is more complicated than you might think.

I didn’t appreciate all the work that goes into getting a plant ready for sale. And yes, most of it is done by hand.
So interesting! Even though they have an automated seed planter, there is still a lot of hand work the nursery.
Makes it much easier and more exact. Seed planting can be rewarding when our weather cooperates. Indoors to get the jump helps too.
