Master Gardeners to hold fall classes

Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties

The fall 2024 Master Gardener Lunch & Learn series will be held via Zoom or in person in Jamestown and Ellicottville.

The in-person sessions will be held at:

  • Cattaraugus County Cornell Cooperative Extension, 28 Parkside Dr., Ellicottville
  • Chautauqua County Cornell Cooperative Extension, Carnahan Center, Jamestown Community College, 241 James St., Jamestown.

Please register and a Zoom link or room location will be emailed to you. Register here. If you cannot attend live, a recording and materials will be emailed to all registrants afterwards.

The first session will be held from noon to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3 and the topic will be “Transform Your Landscape with Flower Bulbs.”

Bulbs, tubers and corms can be grown in many ways — formal gardens, meadow gardens, scattered in lawns, under trees or strategically planted throughout beds and borders. Join Master Gardener John Balacki as he shares some tried and true varieties as well as some unusual varieties.

More classes will be added to this series.

Erie County

Three in-person fall gardening classes will be held by Master Gardener volunteers from Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Erie County.

The cost for the public is $15 per class or three classes for $45. The cost for Master Gardeners from any county is $15 per class or three classes for $40.

Garbage to Gold: Create Your Own Compost

Tuesday, Sept. 10, 6:30-8 p.m.

East Aurora Senior Center, 101 King St., East Aurora

Using compost as a soil amendment adds nutrients to your soil and improves its texture, condition and drainage. Learn about the ratio of nitrogen and carbon sources for your compost pile and how to maintain moisture and temperature levels to produce “black gold” for your garden. Presented by Mary Kamien, CCE Erie Master Gardener volunteer.

Eight Rules for Overwintering Plants

Wednesday, Sept. 18, 6:30-8 p.m.

Parkside Lodge, 84 Parkside Avenue, Buffalo

Many garden plants can be overwintered as houseplants or by allowing them to go dormant in a protected spot. Others can be dug up and stored, including dahlias, begonias, cannas and geraniums. Learn the best practices for helping your plants survive until the next season. Presented by Margaret Raupp & Kathi Scanlon, CCE Erie Master Gardener volunteers.

Fall Gardening Tips for a Productive Garden Next Year

Saturday, Sept. 28, 10-11:30 a.m.

Roswell Park Community Outreach Center, 907 Michigan Ave., Buffalo

What should I do in the garden this fall? What jobs can wait until spring? Can I plant trees now? What perennials should I leave standing and which should I cut back? Get the answers to these questions and more to get a head start on next year’s garden. Presented by Lyn Chimera, CCE Erie Master Gardener volunteer.
