Here’s something you can do: Buffalo United March

The Buffalo United March and Rally is a coalition of people in Western New York who put people and the planet first. The event will take place starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5 in Niagara Square, Buffalo.

Earlier events were held in February and March to protest the dismantling the Environmental Protection Agency and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as well as other concerns.

You don’t have to show up on the dot and you don’t have to stay the whole time. Make a poster with your sentiments on it.

EPA to fire 75% of the research staff

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plans to eliminate its scientific research office and could fire more than 1,000 scientists and other employees, according to The Associated Press (AP) on Wednesday, March 19.

As many as 1,155 chemists, biologists, toxicologists and other scientists — 75% of the research program’s staff — could be laid off, according to documents reviewed by Democratic staff on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

The planned layoffs were assailed by critics as a massive dismantling of the EPA’s longstanding mission to protect public health and the environment.

Massive rollback of environmental rules

On Thursday, March 13, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper posted on Facebook about the previous day’s announcement from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). That announcement set off “a massive rollback of over 30 environmental rules is unparalleled in our nation’s history.

“In addition to the shocking EPA language of ‘driving a dagger into the heart of climate-change religion,’ and the promotion that ‘global warming is simply a side effect of building a modern world,’ buried within this announcement is the intent to reconsider the reach of our nation’s bedrock clean water laws.

“This is only the beginning of efforts to weaken the Clean Water Act.

“We are witnessing the start of the methodical dismantling of the already limited rules and protections in place.”

Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper asks citizens to communicate with their “elected representatives on this action and every action to come that threatens our nation’s water, air, and environment… don’t be complacent, as individual citizens still have the right and the power to affect change.

“Please, help us protect our lakes, our community and our planet.”
