A federal grant of $15.3 million for a project to improve air quality in Medina was canceled Friday.
The grant was one of 24 federal grants totaling more than $3.7 billion that were canceled.
Friday’s announcement said the canceled projects “primarily include funding for carbon capture and sequestration and decarbonization initiatives.”
Such initiatives are part of the fight against climate change. Scientists say that by adding more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, people are adding to the natural greenhouse effect, causing global temperature to rise.
The local grant would have been used by Skyven Technologies Inc. to do a decarbonization project at a local methanol producer, Western New York Energy LLC, in Medina.
Skyven Technologies Inc. is reviewing the appeal process.
The project would have improved air quality, reduced Western New York Energy LLC’s carbon footprint, and improved operational efficiencies at the plant, said Timothy Winters, CEO at Western New York Energy, at the time the project was announced.
