Aurora Senior Citizens Center
The WNY Hosta Society will hold its fall meeting Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Aurora Senior Citizens Center, 101 King St. near Oakwood, East Aurora. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 2 p.m.
The speaker will be Olga Petryszyn, America’s leading hosta breeder and hybridizer. She has produced dozens of very large hostas, some of which have become very popular garden plants. Most of her hostas are named for features of the American landscape and culture and include, H. ‘Manhattan’, ‘Golden Gate’ and ‘Mississippi Delta’. Her hosta ‘Niagara Falls’ won the 2012 Benedict Medal for Outstanding Garden Worthiness and in June this year she was awarded the “Eunice Fisher Outstanding Hybridizer Award” by the American Hosta Society.
Olga, who is from Valparaiso, Indiana, is an amusing and engaging speaker. She will talk about her early life, her introduction to plants and horticulture, the people she met along the way and how she manages to produce such wonderful new plants.
