You can celebrate the longest, darkest nights of the year by venturing out into the lights.
On the first three Fridays and Saturdays in December (December 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21), the Audubon Center & Sanctuary is presenting “Winter Night Lights at Audubon,” a stunning light show in which you are a participant.
Beginning at 6 p.m. with the last admission at 8:15, Audubon’s paved trail will be lit with luminaries and the latest in interactive LED light technology.
Not only beautiful, the lights are there for you to play with: you can tap the xylophone to change the display of lights on the building, play search-and-find with a flashlight that makes owls hoot and other animals light up and make noise, and roll the earth through the seasons. With interactive learning lights about the winter solstice, trees and more, you just might know more when you finish than when you started!
Audubon will provide a fire halfway out for warming up. Hot chocolate, coffee and tea as well as fruit, cookies and other snacks will be available inside the Nature Center.
With about a half-mile walk on a paved and ice-free trail, participants are reminded to dress to be outside with warm winter coats, gloves and winter boots.
Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for Friends of the Nature Center, $6 for ages 3-12, and free for ages 2 and under. Reservations are not required.
Winter Night Lights is sponsored by Volt Vision, Everyday’s True Value, Oneida Lumber/Ace Hardware, and Herbs R 4 U 2.
The Audubon Center & Sanctuary is at 1600 Riverside Road, one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown, New York, and Warren, Pennsylvania.
