Audubon Community Nature Center (ACNC) has added raised beds to its kitchen garden and will hold a raised bed gardening workshop from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, July 6 at the center, at 1600 Riverside Road, one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown, New York, and Warren, Pennsylvania. The rain date is the same time on July 13.
Reg Boutwell, an avid gardener with years of experience, designed and built the raised beds. He is also instructing the workshop.
Raised beds require some thought when it comes to design, and filling the beds requires a bit of know-how to get the best results. They also have some advantages over in-ground gardens.
Last year Audubon volunteers completely renovated the kitchen garden with the goals of showing gardening techniques suitable to our community, providing fresh, healthy food, and teaching self-sufficiency. Food from the garden provides ingredients for dishes served at several ACNC events, and children on field trips or attending day camp are invited to taste fresh produce. Visitors are invited to harvest food, and extra food is taken to St. Susan’s Center.
While reservations for the workshop are appreciated, walk-ins are welcome. To register, call (716) 569-2345 during business hours or register online on the Programs and Events page.
