Preparing for the Holidays the 19th-century Way will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21 at Genesee Country Village & Museum, 1410 Flint Hill Rd., Mumford.

Nineteenth-century families needed to start early if they were going to be ready for the holidays. There were candles to be made, root cellars to be filled and meats to be processed. Most of the family pitched in to create the decorations that would bedeck their homes. Finally came many hours of cooking and baking.

Activities will include tastings, mold making, sausage stuffing, smoking meats and other meat preserving, candle making, wool spinning and gift making. A holiday meal wouldn’t be complete without a ham.  Watch as expert carvers butcher the meat and learn about where food really comes from.

The Christmas Crafts program will include traditional holiday crafts of the time period.  You can make five different crafts. They are $5 each or all five for $20. (You do not need to purchase admission.) The crafts are pine cone Christmas trees, magical Christmas lanterns, wine glass paper Christmas trees,
decorating glass ornaments and fabric ball ornaments.

Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for children 16 and under and free for children 3 and under and for members.
