The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens will hold a Nature Explorers Art and Science Camp from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays during from July 10 to Aug. 18 at the Botanical Gardens, 2655 South Park Ave., Buffalo.

Campers who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade will discover plants and the natural world through art and science. Explorers will spend time discovering the Botanical Gardens, completing multimedia art projects, learning drawing and painting skills, playing games and taking home their own plants to care for.

The themes for each week will be:

July 10-14: Wild and Wacky Water. The art focus will be on painting in watercolor using techniques of washes, salt, dropping in color and spattering. We will paint beach, stream and ocean landscapes. Learn all about the water cycle and the different ways plants use water.

July 17-21: Pollinators. Participants will sculpt a honeybee using clay, paint the symmetry of flowers in watercolor and tempera on the class wall mural, learn the art of quilling to make a 3-D picture and find out how pollination works by dissecting flowers and visiting our busy beehive.

July 24-28: Plants we eat. Participants will paint a classical still life composed of fruits and vegetables on a tablecloth, discover the method of botanical drawing by carefully inspecting plant parts and drawing them to scale, learn about many of the plants you can eat at the Gardens and squish oranges and other fruits into juice, make flour, and sample weird looking fruits.

July 31 to Aug. 4: Plants and our Planet. Become stewards of the planet this week of camp. Participants will design posters on preserving habitat for wild animals using colored pencils and markers, cover discarded bottles with paper scraps, paint and glue to create a beautiful vase, use recycled materials to craft planters and bird feeders, play environmentally-themed games, explore the Arboretum and test the effects of pollution.

Aug. 7 to 11: Rainforests. Participants will discover how plants and animals live in the rainforest while exploring tropical greenhouses, draw colorful parrots, hummingbirds, and monkeys in oil pastels, create a collage of tropical flowers, fold an origami snake, play games and build a tropical terrarium to bring home.

Aug. 14-18: Woodland Adventures. Participants will create a painting in tempera of a northwoods scene complete with birds, deer, raccoons, reptiles, and bugs, weave a wall-hanging using grasses, twigs, and feathers, use pencil to create leaf and bark rubbings, explore woodland habitats while learning about local plants and animals, participate in a special camp scavenger hunt and build a fairy garden.

Campers are required to bring a bagged lunch. A morning and afternoon snack is provided.

Summer Camp interns are also needed. Contact the Botanical Gardens at khammer@buffalogardens.com or 827-1584 ext. 207 for information.
