SUMMARY:Earth Day: Food\, the Ultimate Climate Change Messenger
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Earth Day on Saturday\, April 25 with a talk by Dr. Michael Hoffman on “Food: The Ultimate Climate Change Messenger\,” networking\, and conversation afterwards. \n\n\n\nThe event is free. Advance registration is requested. \n\n\n\nMike Hoffmann is dedicating his life to confronting the grand challenge of climate change by helping people understand and appreciate what is happening through the foods we all love and need. He has published climate change articles in the popular press – The Hill\, Fortune\, Medium\, and USA Today and is lead author of Our changing menu: Climate change and the foods we love and need (Cornell Press 2021). He has also done a TEDx Talk – Climate change: It’s time to raise our voices – and given over 150 climate change – related talks. Mike’s life’s experiences include growing up on a one-cow dairy farm and serving in the Marines during the Vietnam War. He held multiple leadership roles in Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and now holds the title of Professor Emeritus. He will tell the climate change story until he no longer can. \n\n\n\n11:00 am Network with local partners at their info tables \n\n\n\n11:45 am  – Dr. Michael Hoffmann will present \n\n\n\nFood is essential for life\, it is emotive\, and it is imbedded in our cultures and family histories. However\, climate change is changing everything on the menu giving us unlimited stories to tell and make climate change relevant to everyone. We all eat! The common ground of food even crosses the political divide. Regardless of political affiliation most people are concerned about climate change impacts on their food\, and they are interested in learning more—an audience awaits. Food is the ultimate climate change messenger. This is not another doom and gloom story but one focused on a solution. Everyone can tap the power of food to confront climate change and keep our favorites on the menu. And coincidentally\, help keep the planet livable. \n\n\n\n12:30 – audience Q/A \n\n\n\n1:00 – Staying at the Table: A Circle Discussion with Mike Hoffman. This is an optional activity for those who wish to delve deeper into the topcis of Mike’s presentation. Light refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\nMike will also have signed copies of his book available to purchase. \n\n\n\nThis is a free event. Donations are gratefully accepted.

SUMMARY:Live webinar: 'What Is Wild and Why It Matters'
DESCRIPTION:What Is Wild and Why It Matters will be presented by Rick Darke\, known for shaping how we think about wildness in managed landscapes. This event is a fundraiser for by Wild Ones and Homegrown National Park; it’s free or pay what you can. \n\n\n\nCan’t make it? A recording will be available. \n\n\n\nRegister here. \n\n\n\nRick Darke is an award-winning landscape designer\, author\, photographer\, and educator. His work bridges ecology\, cultural geography and aesthetics\, showing that residential landscapes can be biologically rich and visually compelling at the same time. \n\n\n\nDarke has collaborated with leading ecological thinkers\, including Douglas Tallamy\, and co-authored influential books such as The Living Landscape\, The Wild Garden: Expanded Edition\, and Gardens of the High Line: Elevating the Nature of Modern Landscapes. His now-classic book\, The American Woodland Garden\, was among the first to employ firsthand studies of wild habitats to provide landscape design and management strategies grounded in living processes. \n\n\n\nThrough decades of design\, writing\, and teaching\, Darke has advanced the idea that wilderness need not be something separate from our daily lives\, but is instead essential to connecting us with the extraordinarily interwoven web of life we call nature.
