Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s Agriculture Program will hold its 2022 Fall L.E.A.F. (Learn. Empower. Achieve. Farm.) Workshop Series at the JCC (Jamestown Campus) Carnahan Center, 525 Falconer St., Jamestown.

The L.E.A.F. Workshop Series is open to the public, including homesteaders, beginning farmers, established farmers looking to diversify and grow, agriculture enthusiasts and everyone in between.
Each workshop will be two hours long and led by an experienced instructor. The LEAF workshops are designed to be interactive, so participants are encouraged to bring their questions and ideas to this collaborative environment.
“So, You Want To Start A Farm,” 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21
This workshop is for participants who have ever dreamed of having their own farming operation. Topics covered will be broad and include enterprise selection, insurance, marketing, and resources for future exploration of owning your own farm business. The instructor for this workshop will be Katelyn Walley-Stoll, Team Leader and Farm Business Management Specialist from the Southwest New York Dairy, Livestock, and Field Crops Program with Cornell Cooperative Extension. She is a graduate of Cornell University with a degree in Animal Science and Ag Business Management, and owns and operates a diversified livestock farm. The cost of this workshop is $10 per family.
“Seed Saving,” 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22
This is the season for another change in weather and we will watch our beautiful summer blooms and bountiful fall harvests come to a dwindling close. If you are like Brenda Snyder, founder of the WNY Seed Library, you might want to learn how to preserve the seeds that are at your fingertips. Whatever your motive is–saving money on next year’s flowers and veggies, keeping heirlooms in the area, trading seeds with other horticulture enthusiasts, or trying to take another step to being self-sustainable–this is an excellent workshop. Snyder will be instruct participants on how to preserve seeds that otherwise might go to waste. The cost of this workshop is $5 per person.
“Equine – End of Life,” 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27
Preparing for end-of-life decisions is challenging yet critically important to ensure humane care of our horses. This seminar will discuss end-of-life considerations, choices for humane equine euthanasia, and viable options for carcass disposal. Discussion of planning for equine care upon death of an owner will also be discussed. Participants can anticipate leaving the seminar feeling prepared to create written end-of-life plans. Karin D. Bump, Ph.D., PAS will lead the classthrough a compassionate and complete discussion. She is the director of Saddle Up NY!, Founder and ED of the National Association of Equine Affiliated Academics. She is also a partner of Equine Education Network: EQUUS Foundation, a contributor to Equine Academics and a certified Business Mentor. The cost of this workshop is $5 per person.
“Business Planning for Beginning Farmers,” 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5
Business plans for farms are often viewed as yet another chore to do and usually result in dusty binders taking up space on the office shelf. This discussion-based workshop will walk you through the mental exercise of planning your future agricultural adventures. Participants will leave with a better understanding of the use of a business plan, the essential components, and a to-do list of things to think about to inform future planning efforts. Additional opportunities for one-on-one follow-up will also be offered. FSA Borrower credits may be made available for your attendance. “Yummy Yeast Breads,” 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11
Do you love the taste of homemade breads? Learn how easy it is to make various types of yeast breads. Participants will learn basic breadmaking techniques by making a batch of English muffin bread. Information will also be given on rules and regulations for selling baked goods at farmers markets. Everyone will go home with a loaf of fresh, warm bread. The instructor will be Linda Dewey, fifth-generation owner/operator of Silver Falls Farm in Perrysburg, which has been continuously owned and operated by the Dewey family since 1817. The cost of this workshop is $10 per person.
“Vet 101 – What to Do When Things Go Wrong,” 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13
Many beginning farmers and homesteaders have limited access to vet care and it is important to know how to care for your animals when things go wrong. This workshop will cover many of the basics for a beginning or small farmer, including items to have on hand in your tool kit, signs of illness, a discussion on when to call the vet, information on local vets, and how to measure key vital signs. Join New York State veterinarian Dr. Shannon Carpenter, who has many years of experience with livestock animal operations and has previously worked as a private veterinarian. The cost of this workshop is $5 per person.
“Raising capital for Your Farm,” 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19
Finding funding for your farm business can oftentimes be the most difficult and stressful task when first starting out. This workshop will cover Ag lenders, what lenders are looking for, how to prepare a balance sheet, basics of compiling a projection, and FSA loan basics. Join Amanda Ritchey, Farm Loan Manager for USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) at the Jamestown Credit office. Her office services Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Erie Counties. She has been a loan official for FSA for the last ten years. Before that, she worked as a Nutrient Management Specialist for both private industry and Soil and Water Districts. She was an Agricultural Ombudsman for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and has worked as a researcher with Penn State Extension. She grew up on a dairy farm, volunteered as a Master Gardener and grew blueberries. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture from Penn State. The cost of this workshop is $5 per person.
“Basics of Home Food Preservation,” 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25
Come learn about preserving your bountiful harvest or local produce purchases to be enjoyed during those cold winter months. The class will discuss food safety and safe preservation practices and make some freezer jam. Instructors will include Cornell Cooperative Extension – Chautauqua County’s Executive Director Emily Reynolds and Master Gardener Coordinator Shannon Rinow, both certified Master Food Preservers. The cost of this workshop is $10 per person.
“Sourdough and Salt Rising Breads,” 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1
Following up from the Yummy Yeast Breads workshop, the instructor will lead a session on some of the more advanced breads, including sourdough and salt rising. Participants will learn more about breadmaking techniques and will receive recipes and instructions along with opportunities for hands-on demonstrations and tastings. Information will also be given on rules and regulations for selling baked goods at farmers markets. “Baby Mama Drama: Do’s and Don’ts of Animal Birth on the Farm,” 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8
When thinking about growing your herd, animal birth will be one of the most exciting and challenging aspects of your farmstead. This interactive workshop will discuss many of the key aspects to birth on the farm including gestation lengths for multiple species, signs of labor, creating the ideal freshening environment, baby care, mama care, and what to look for as you try to prevent issues that can sometimes arise. Leading this workshop will be New York State Veterinarian Dr. Shannon Carpenter, who has many years of experience with livestock animal operations and has previously worked as a private veterinarian. The cost of this workshop is $5 per person.
“Old Fashioned Soap Making,” 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 12
Do you have used cooking oil or extra lard from butchering a hog and not know what to do with it or have you ever wanted to learn about making soap? Learn how to make homemade soap using lye and animal and/or vegetable fats. You will learn the history and science behind soap making, equipment, supplies needed, and how various fats and oils affect the finished product. Everyone will participate in making a batch of soap and will get to take home a bar (a portion of the class fee helps cover these supplies). “Sewing 101,” 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17
Are you adult that wants to learn some sewing basics while creating a beautiful handmade apron? Join Nancy Johnson, 4-H Leader/Teacher, in making a 30 -minute apron that will teach you how to read a simple pattern, cut out fabric, pin, sew straight lines, gather fabric, add trim, and much more. This is a great project for many levels. The cost of this workshop is $5 per person. The supply list is available upon request/registration.
“Grant Writing 101,” 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22
Do you need just a little bit of funding to help out your next agriculture project or expansion? Don’t know where to start? Know where to start but grants are overwhelming to you? Join Paula Pichon, a professional grant writer for the City of Jamestown and Jamestown Community College. Paula is an experienced grants manager and has a successful history in writing grants with numerous governmental agencies. Participants will get to apply for a mock grant to get a feel for the process. The cost of this workshop is $5 per person.
