The Western New York Iris Society will hold a design techniques demonstration at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8 at 125 Lafayette Blvd., Williamsville.

The demonstration will be led by Maria Gerbracht. The theme for the WNYIS Iris Show on June 17  is “Tiptoe through the Iris.” Gerbracht will discuss how to include a foreign thing that is not usually found in a design–footwear. She will show how to use it as:

a) container — perhaps by lining a shoe with aluminum foil and fill with oasis.

b) a feature whereas the design is behind it and it is in the center, surrounded by flowers.

c) an accessory in which the design is the main part and accessory (small, less conspicuous) is alongside; they “go together” in color, texture, formality-informality and speak to the theme (ballet, dancing, on the beach, patio entertaining–sandals).

d) as an underlay, for example, a flip-flop under a container, or footwear featured on a fabric and the colors from the fabric are repeated in the design.
