A nine-part series on growing your own produce will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturdays at the Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP), 387 Massachusetts Ave., Buffalo.

You will learn what to do in your garden, month by month, to successfully grow your own produce. From small container gardens to larger backyards, This class is catered to you and the group of beginning gardeners who will join you in learning how to grow your own produce.

February 9: Planning, Designing and Framework for our Climate Zone
The first session will focus on planning the garden. With a focus on companion planting and permaculture design principles that maximize yields and utilize space efficiently, you will learn about our climate zone and what defines our growing season. You will be determining what you want to grow and mapping it out for your space. There will be seed catalogs available for inspiration and instruction as well as a sneak peek into MAP’s annual seedling sale.

March 9: Seed Starting, Early Plantings and Planting Calendars
MAP starts the bulk of their seeds throughout March, so this session will focus on just that. They will cover how to start seeds indoors, and what varieties can be started outside at that time. They will work on a planting calendar to keep up with and use as reference throughout the next couple of months.

April 13: Site Preparations, Soil testing, Soil Building and Spring Greens
Getting your garden ready for plants is so important. The soil that we have can make or break success in our gardens. This month the class will discuss ways to insure the health of soil. You will complete a basic soil test and look at remedies and strategies to get it ready for the first plantings. Special Compost Guru, Sashti, will be there to talk about ways to compost at home. Please take a small soil sample for testing. This month MAP will also have seedlings available for pre-order.

May 11: Transplanting Tips, Pollinators and Native Plants in Your Garden
A lot of fun work happens in May. We can finally plant most everything out into our gardens. This month the class will talk about successful transplanting and how to increase yields (and aesthetics) by attracting pollinators into our gardens.

June 8th: Maintenance, Harvest and Succession Planting
Gardens should be up and running by June, but that doesn’t mean that our work is done. Now is the time to build trellises for certain plants. You can also begin harvesting. The class will look at ways to optimize spaces and what seeds to start now to ensure continual harvest. Members of the class will evaluate their plans and calendars to update them accordingly.

August 10: Seed Saving and Fall/Winter Gardening
This is the time to start saving seeds and thinking of cooler weather coming in. The class will cover the basics of seed saving and get a chance to practice on site. The class will also look at what can get into the ground now for the winter and even spring.

September 14: Recipe Share and Harvest Celebration
This month there should be a bounty of food coming out of your garden. Take a dish to share and the class will exchange favorite recipes. Members will also discuss ways to put up our harvest including canning, dehydrating, fermenting and freezing. The class will look at what’s left to go into our gardens.

October 12: Garlic, Cover Crops and Putting Your Garden to Bed
It is yet another time of change in our gardens. Everything is turning inward, preparing to the rest that winter allows. October is also the month that you plant garlic for harvest in July next year. The class will discuss what varieties of garlic are best grown in our climate zone, and even have some of MAP’s garlic for sale. The class will also discuss the process of putting your garden to rest for the winter in order to sustain and build on its vitality, including cover crops and mulches that work on your soil all winter.

November 2: Crop Rotation and Next Year’s Garden
At MAP they use a four-year crop rotation plan. This month is a great time to look at rotation possibilities and plan what you will plant in your garden next spring. It is the final class, and so they will also do some evaluation of the program.
