Gardening for Monarchs at Beaver Meadows

Beaver Meadow Audubon Center will host a gardening for monarchs presentation from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16 at the Beaver Meadows, 1610 Welch Rd, Java Center.

Donna Barski, volunteer naturalist with Buffalo Audubon Society, and Ellen Folts, horticulturist and owner of Amanda’s Native Perennial Nursery, will provide updated news on the current status and habitat requirements of monarch butterflies.

They will discuss specific host and nectaring plants along with other perennials and provide advice on their cultivation, with a view to attracting a variety of pollinators.

A limited supply of milkweed seeds will be available free to participants. Common and swamp milkweed plants, along with a variety of perennial wildflowers, will be available for purchase.

The presentation will conclude with a raffle of a butterfly rearing cage.
