The Audubon Nature Center will hold a three-hour DSLR boot camp at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 4 at the center, 1600 Riverside Rd., one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown, NY, and Warren, PA.

Reservations with payment are required by Wednesday, June 1 and can be made online or by calling (716) 569-2345.

The workshop fee is $48 for the public or $36 for Friends of the Nature Center.

Photography instructor Mark Kirsch will show you how to wean yourself off the automatic mode on your DSLR camera. This hands-on workshop is for those who want to do more than just turn it on and hope for the best. The focus will be on the different program options (Manual Operation, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority), special picture modes, how aperture and shutter settings affect a photograph, selecting proper white balance settings, choosing RAW versus jpg capture modes– all the basic important camera functions you need to know.

Participants will need to dress for the weather, including using insect repellent and sunscreen if necessary. Bring your DSLR camera with an empty memory card and a fully charged battery. (Note: this class is NOT designed for point-and-shoot cameras.)

A teacher of photography and painting at Southwestern High School for more than two decades, Kirsch also teaches photography at Jamestown Community College and trains educators in character education and classroom management skills. Kirsch has been in the business of environmental, portrait, and wedding photography for more than 20 years.
