The Western New York Land Conservancy is hosting a wildflower hike from 1 – 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3 at the Niagara Escarpment Preserve, Leete Road, Lockport, N.Y. 14094.
Attendees will be able to see several unique woodland plants as they walk through the preserve’s mature hardwood forests. The hike will be led by Ed Fuchs, Joanne Schlegel, and Matt Candeias. Fuchs and Schlegel are long-time members and past presidents of the Niagara Frontier Botanical Society, and Candeias is the founder of the very popular “In Defense of Plants” Facebook page.
The Niagara Escarpment Preserve is a 36-acre property on Leete Road in Lockport, protected by the Land Conservancy in 2011. It is rich in flora and fauna because of its location on the Niagara Escarpment, a unique rock formation that extends 750 miles across Ontario and into Wisconsin.
The hike is appropriate for people of all ages and will not be strenuous. It is also free and open to the public, but space is limited. Pre-registration is required. The Land Conservancy will share directions and parking instructions with everyone who registers for the event.
To register, or for more information, contact the Land Conservancy at 687-1225, or by e-mailing info@wnylc.org.
