SUMMARY:Coming up: volunteer tree planting with WNY Land Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:The Western New York Land Conservancy will hold a tree planting party at their newly protected Black Creek Preserve in Birdsall\, Allegany County. Volunteers will help plant 75 native trees along Black Creek to improve wildlife habitat\, stabilize streambanks\, and protect water quality. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to get outside\, work with your hands\, and make a lasting impact at one of our newest permanently protected preserves. In addition to planting trees\, volunteers will help dig holes\, install deer fencing and posts to protect the young trees\, and haul water and mulch to give them the best chance for success. \n\n\n\nAll experience levels are welcome. Please take sturdy boots and work gloves. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBonus news: Another property is protected! In February\, the WNY Land Conservancy closed on a 45-acre property on Grand Island. The as-yet unnamed property on the east side of the island includes more than 400 feet of Niagara River shoreline\, along with wetlands and wet meadows that support species such as Jefferson and blue-spotted salamanders\, western chorus frogs\, and many bird species. \n\n\n\nFunding for the project came entirely from the Niagara River Greenway’s Ecological Standing Committee (GESC). The grant also provides funding for restoration\, while WNY PRISM has awarded additional assistance for an invasive species inventory. Over the next two years\, we will conduct habitat restoration to improve conditions for wildlife and the community. To support this work\, the preserve will not be publicly accessible at this time. \n\n\n\nThis is the second property the Land Conservancy has permanently protected in 2026 and brings the total acreage permanently protected for the year to 131 acres.
