Re-Tree WNY was established on November 3, 2006 by a group of about 40 Western New York residents who saw firsthand the devastation done to the treescape by the freak October 2006 snowstorm. Led by Maurer and co-founder David Colligan, volunteers aimed to replace the approximately 30,000 trees that were damaged or destroyed. The first planting took place on Arbor Day in 2007 and the goal was met 10 years later. Re-Tree continues to plant trees as well as to teach others how to properly care for trees.
The award event will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Terrace at Delaware Park, 199 Lincoln Parkway, Buffalo. There will be light refreshments and giveaways for all who attend. There will be a cash bar.
Tickets are $50, and all the proceeds will go toward the purchase and planting of new trees in the years to come.
