You can place an order for tree and shrub seedlings in sales being held now by counties and by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC). In addition, tree seedlings are available to schools for free.
New York State DEC
The Spring Seedling Sale of the NYS DEC provides more than 40 native tree and shrub species for low prices.
They offer various mixed species packets including streamside habitat builders and pollinator-popular flowering species.
The deadline to order is May 9, but some species sell out quickly. DEC strongly urges customers to order by phone at 518-587-1120 so that operators can provide the most up-to-date availability information.

Free tree seedlings for schools
Schools and school organizations in New York State are eligible to receive free seedlings for spring planting through the DEC School Seedling Program. The seedlings can be planted on school grounds or other community spaces, and offer teachers a great resource to enhance environmental lessons. Applications must be received at the nursery by March 31.
