Deadline is Nov. 30 to submit photos, art to state Arbor Day contest

Photos and illustrations are being accepted through Nov. 30 for the New York State 2016 Arbor Day Poster Contest.

Throughout the years, the beautiful Arbor Day posters have become collector’s items for many.

More than 100,000 copies of the 2016 poster will be printed. They will be distributed to 3,500 schools, at the State Fair and at other locations.

The winning artist will be recognized at the state’s Arbor Day celebration on April 29. Details on the celebration will be announced.

The organizations involved in Arbor Day for New York State are the New York State Nursery & Landscape Association, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, International Paper Company, New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets, Empire State Forest Products Association and New York State Arborists ISA Chapter, Inc.

Arbor Day is a national observance that celebrates the importance of trees and promotes tree planting and care. First celebrated in 1872, it was established as a way to encourage farmers and homesteaders to plant trees that would provide shade, shelter, food, fuel and beauty to open areas.
