Seeds make great stocking stuffers & more items too good to miss

Seeds are already available at some garden centers including Arbodale Nurseries & Landscaping, 480 Dodge Road, Getzville.

Slip a packet into a Christmas card for a gardening friend, or use them as a stocking stuffer.

Get some seeds for yourself, too. As soon as the holidays are over, I’m always aching to get into the garden, but there’s not much to do when the ground is frozen. That’s why I love this tip on how to make a mini-greenhouse from David Clark, local horticulturist. It gives me something to plant outside– in January! I tried it and it really works.

By the way, Arbordale carries seeds grown in New York State.

Random tip from Garden Walk Buffaloorange flower in Buffalo NY

There is so much we can learn from other gardeners. Occasionally I will share tips here that don’t quite fit into another article, but are still helpful or even inspirational.

Here’s a good reminder from Scott Conner on Vermont Street, whom I visited during Garden Walk Buffalo. He pointed out this orange flower, which he couldn’t name. It was a “volunteer” that just showed up in his garden.

Instead of weeding out the plant immediately because it wasn’t part of a master plan, Conner let it grow to see what it would be. He was delighted with the results.

His advice: “Watch what comes up because lots of times, it can be pretty as hell!”

It’s like having a bunch of bulletin boards, and you “pin” pictures to them.

You can label your boards any way you want to. You could give them broad names, such as “Gardening,” or have specific topics, such as “Vertical Gardening” or “Fairy Gardens.” I even have a board called “Black & White,” which includes black flowers and garden designs done in black and white.

It’s fun looking at the amazing pictures other people have pinned to their boards. You can repin their pictures or pin pictures from websites such as Buffalo-NiagaraGardening.com. (I don’t mind when people pin pictures from this website because Pinterest retains the link to Buffalo-NiagaraGardening.com. Even if that pin is repinned a hundred times on Pinterest, it will still link back here.)

Pinterest isn’t for just gardening. People share pictures of animals, architecture, home decor, crafts, food and drink, fashion and many other things. Humor and quotes are popular, too.

Check out Pinterest and feel free to pin photos from Buffalo-NiagaraGardening.com.
