Master Gardener training scheduled for fall, anyone can register

Master gardener program in Niagara CountyCornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County is offering the Master Gardener Training Program this fall.

You don’t need to be a resident of Niagara County to participate in this program.

These classes provide participants with basic training in a variety of horticultural subjects using class lectures, group discussion questions, quizzes and hands-on activities in our greenhouse and on our grounds.

All classes will be held at the Lockport office in the Large Meeting Room of the 4-H Training Center, 4487 Lake Avenue, Lockport, except for field trips, which will be held at local parks.

Class topics will include soils and fertilizers, tree identification, plant propagation, diagnosing plant problems, annual and perennial flowers, vegetable gardening, pruning, organic gardening, entomology, plant pathology, backyard fruit growing and honeybees and their importance to gardening.

The required textbooks are free and are available by downloading from the Internet. A complete syllabus with the order of topics, directions for obtaining the required textbooks, assigned readings and discussion questions will be e-mailed to participants in early October.

Classes start on Oct. 29, so you should register as soon as possible so that you can do reading before the first class.

The cost for the entire course is $280. Cooperative Extension would like students to pay the tuition fee by Oct. 15. Niagara County Master Gardener program

  1. Michelle, as I hear about training programs being scheduled, I will share them on this site. Not every county holds a training program every year. For more information, you can contact the Cornell Cooperative Extension program in your county. Find the list of local offices here.

  2. Carol Ann Harlos, Master Gardener coordinator for Erie County, says: We plan to have classes to create more Master Gardeners in September of this year. Anyone who is interested in receiving an application later in the season should call 852-5400 X179 and give their name and address to Kim Howell.

  3. Christine, I got this response from Chautauqua County Cornell Cooperative Extension: “A master gardener class core training is occuring now in Chautuauqua County and the class is full. Trowel talks and other gardening classes will be offered in 2014 – a list will be offered in February.” Keep checking the Events Page on Buffalo-NiagaraGardening.com for classes that are taking place now, and I’ll keep adding classes as the organizations send the information.

  4. John Farfaglia of Niagara County Cooperative Extension is also planning to hold Master Gardener classes in fall of 2014. However, they will be holding some classes this winter and I’ll post them as soon as he sends me the information. There are lots of classes already listed on our Events Page. Erie County Cooperative Extension has scheduled classes this fall, and the Botanical Gardens has a series of horticultural classes, too.

  5. Carol Ann Harlos, who is in charge of the Master Gardener program for Erie County, said: “We hope to offer training in the autumn of 2014. I don’t know about other counties.” I’ll see what else I can find out.
