You must order by Sept. 4. Pickup is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Saturday, Sept. 11 at Orchard Glen Retirement Community, 6055 Armor Duells Rd., Orchard Park.

Native plants are vigorous and hardy and, once established, require no irrigation or fertilization. They provide a habitat for butterflies, insects, hummingbirds and other small birds and animals we know and need.

These native plants are available:

Smilacina (maianthemum) racemosa—False Solomon’s Seal
This is an outstanding multi-season plant. It flowers in May to June with white creamy plumes of flowers (see photo at right). Enjoy its lovely green foliage in summer and red berries in fall (see photo above). It grows 1 to 1 1/2 feet tall.

bloodroot sale to benefit WNY Land ConservancySanquinaria Canadensis—Bloodroot
When the pure white flowers of the bloodroot emerge you know spring has arrived (see photo at left). While the flowers do not last long, the low-growing scallop shaped leaves last into late August. This plant likes shade and moist soil.

Iris versicolor—Blue Flag Irisblue flag iris sale to benefit WNY Land Conservancy

This is an excellent plant for moist or wet areas (see photo below right). The violet blue flowers arrive in late spring. Blue Flag Iris is at home in a submerged pool or in ordinary garden soil. This iris grows from 1 1/2 to 2 feet tall.  Plant in part shade to full sun.

Aruncus diocus—Goats Beard
If you need some height in your garden, try goats beard– it grows 3 to 6 feet tall (see photo below left). You can plant in shade or sun, but it grows taller in the sun. Makes a bold statement and foliage stays nice throughout the summer into the fall.

Mums will also be sold in 8- and 10-inch pots ready for planting, and in 12-inch decorator plastic pots with a mix of mums.

  1. I often do articles like this on sales. When you subscribe, you’ll get the newest articles. Also be sure to check the Upcoming Events page. You’ll see that this Friday, April 5, 2013 is the deadline to pre-order plants in the Great Plant Sale at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens. The sale is May 18-19, 2013. Mischler’s will hold its 49-cent perennial sale Friday, April 19 through Saturday, April 27, 2013. I add plant sales to the Upcoming Events page as I receive the information.
